How To Unblock Post From Farmville

Know your chickens? - PART II

BROILER: LIFE AND WORKS
Fifty billion.
It 's the number of chickens produced every year for a total weight of about 86,772,000 tons [1] (the data refer to 2007 but the relationship is clear that production is increasing), there are three multinational companies that control more than 90% of world production, 690,000 tonnes of meat produced in Italy and only for domestic consumption [2] .

The broilers are the jewel most advanced genetic engineering, a selection aimed at reducing the time and cost of production. A modern broiler has a growth rate four times higher than a hen and a chicken doubled compared to the same breed of thirty years ago, more than 2 kg in 29 days [3] (a chicken that scratched the Hague takes 3 months or more, depending on the breed, to achieve the same weight [4] ).

To meet the needs of the market growth of broilers is not homogenous, has been increased development of the chest (forming 18% of the total weight) that is disproportionate to legs and wings, unless requested by the consumer because they are less developed. The horse Battle of broilers, however, the relationship food - Weight: 2.500 kg in 1976 were required to feed for every kg of meat and today it takes only 1.660. The broilers are raised on the ground in large warehouses containing 20,000 to 30,000 head per production cycle. The temperature is kept constant thanks to forced ventilation, water and food are delivered automatically by auto-Dosing tanks hang from the roof. Each square meter is crowded with about 33 kg of chicken up to, under certain conditions, a density of 42kg / m 3 [5] . Usable space for each chicken is less than one A4 page.

Most broilers are reared indoors, with no windows and exposed to artificial light for up to 23 hours a day.
Chickens regulate their life cycle on the alternation of light and darkness are active during the day and go in search of food, rest at night. Distorting the day / night cycle through the use of artificial light disrupt their behavior: continuous lighting promotes a more constant food intake (as fat) while a lower light intensity discourages animals from moving (even more so fat). Factory farms the hours of darkness themselves are 1-2 per day and this causes severe sleep disorders: the chicken little sleep and bad. Lack of sleep weakens the animal and further reduces its ability to cope with stressful situations. Research has shown that constant light causes blindness and buphtalmos (enlargement and leakage of the eye) already at 10 days of life. The view is a very developed in the chicken and that these anomalies may not have a negative impact on its overall health.

Genetic selection is the main cause of many diseases that affect chickens, biorhythm tax changes cause immense problems to the animal. While growth accelerated bone structure can not adequately reinforce the bones are bent, the joints fail. Many animals can not walk: they are deformed, they feel excruciating pain to the legs, are forced to move to crawl between the droppings that cover the whole concrete floor (cleaning the warehouse is only at the end of the cycle, to give the "welcome" newcomers).

These chickens, as poor health, will pass the 3 / 4 of their life estate, imprisoned by an unnatural body and space is limited. In these herds the temperatures are always high, especially during summer months, due to continuous artificial light and manure that accumulates. Every summer heat stress kills its victims: the thousands of chickens are dead, others suffering. The manure produced ammonia, abundantly present in the air along with high humidity and carbon dioxide, causes inflammation in the animals internal, external and abscesses. Tight against one another, stressed and sick chickens pecking violently at each other end up causing serious injury up to the cannibalism. In these hot, humid, dirty and full of toxic fumes, the lesions become infected with bacteria and fungi - especially with Escherichia coli - exacerbating the state suffering of the animal. The lack of a harmonious growth causes heart disease and ascites. The sudden death syndrome (SMI), a disease known only within the farms, is a leading cause of death of chickens in Europe with an incidence ranging from 0.1% to 3%. SMI, also called "flip-over" is an acute heart failure. The symptoms are sudden and vigorous flapping of wings, muscle twitching, loss of balance, the bird falls with a crash and die. SMI may be a contributing cause of the constant light that prevents the broiler the necessary dose of rest. Ascites is a disease that causes swelling of the abdomen due the formation of liquid and is the leading cause of death in broilers (it is estimated that approximately 4.7% of those reared intensively worldwide will be affected). Due to the rapid growth of the bird, the right side of the heart enlarges to allow an "increase in the transport blood." In a chain reaction, breathing becomes faster, the lungs become congested, the liver functions are affected, the ' abdomen swells with fluid and increases the risk of heart failure. In advanced stages the birds are no longer able to reach the troughs. Typically, death is preceded by a long agony, and is probably the result of dehydration of starvation, of respiratory failure and cardiac [6] .

The first movie was secretly filmed by Animal Aid. All videos documenting the living conditions on factory farms have been filmed in complete secrecy.
This is the practice. Try to visit a intensive farming, and none will open the doors. The survey conducted in 2008 shows the growth of broilers in a typical herd of 30,000 animals, the first birds to visit the exhibition from 10 to 12 days, then 20, 26 and finally to 39, three days before slaughter. Look at the rapid growth of these poor animals, the decrease in their health, the increase of animals die, the progressive lack of space. In the beginning of the video broiler move almost naturally, to 39 days are all properties. The girl who appears in the movie comes close to one of them with a bowl of water: the chicken can not move, can not drink, can not stand. Eating their meat is no longer your right; should be able to drink and eat one of them.

The second film was-illegally, as the first-shot by Compassion in World Farming. Nothing new compared to the previous video. The density of chickens is monstrous, no one would wander around like a chicken in nature. No one can stand, legs too thin, crooked, and the body is too large and heavy. No one has a uniform plumage, none appears healthy, the are too many dead, the living are all sick.

not we can make the animals pay a high price in the name of the "flavor". There is nothing fair or sustainable in this ugly story. Raising animals, slaughtering and eating is painful enough, let them live this way means cruelty. Just terrible cruelty.
